Mental Health awareness program – MYind Buddys

You may remember, earlier this year Thomas Interiors ran an article as part of the promotion for Mental Health Awareness Week.
As this is something that effects people all year round, we wanted to remind everyone that you are not alone and its good to talk.

The subject matter of this particular topic is quite emotive to Thomas Interiors as it is a subject that we feel very strongly about and we are delighted that our clients at Heathrow agree and have designed a program called MYind Buddys which is a Mental Health awareness program designed for Heathrow Airport Employees, Suppliers and Construction Contractors.

The programme is designed to provide a better understanding towards mental health and help identify the signs if you think a colleague is struggling. A team of MYind Buddys have been specifically trained in Mental Health First aid and are available to listen and provide advice on where to get extra support.

This is something that we feel is imperative for our organisation as we were alarmed to learn that the biggest killer of men from the ages of 18 to 45 was suicide, over 8000, the majority of them having no previous diagnosed mental condition. Of those 8000, 1000 of that figure work in the construction industry.

We at Thomas Interiors appreciate that these figures are both alarming and completely unacceptable and we want to do as much as we can to support our staff and make sure that they have access to all of the help that the need, should they be experiencing difficulties.

With this in mind, earlier this year Thomas Interiors Senior Project Manager, Andrew Allison attended and successfully completed his two day MHFA Mental Health First Aid course this week and is now a qualified Mental Health First Aider.

The feedback we had from Andrew was that he found the MHFA course to be extremely insightful and has now been trained to spot signs to look for with an outline guide to being a first responder in what to say and do, First Aid for the mind injury if you wish.

Andrew is Thomas Interiors our first qualified Mental Health First Aider but we hope to have others join him soon.

Look out for MYind Buddys conversation sessions or ask your supervisor for more information and together we can address the stigma around mental health.
