TIL Chargers in the Proactive Charity Football Tournament

On a very hot and sunny Thursday Afternoon 8 members of the Thomas Interiors team took part in the Proactive 5 a side tournament at Goals, Heathrow.

The tournament which had 32 teams taking part from all over the Heathrow Supply Chain was brilliantly organised by Gerard Hegeny and the Team from Pro Active Technical Recruitment.

The ‘TIL Chargers’ were initially placed in to a league of 5 teams, which included representatives from Morgan Sindall, Trueform, POD-TRAK and Grove Developments Ltd. Each team had to play one another in a 10 minute match where each team was would be awarded 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss. Once all matches had been completed the top 2 teams from each league, who had accumulated the most points would then qualify for the knock out stages.

Matt Hollister – Health and Safety Advisor for Thomas Interiors stated;

When Gerard and the team at Proactive invited us to take part in the 5 a side tournament, we were thrilled to accept and were really looking forward to taking part. We quickly managed to get players recruited from within the company and got straight to work at putting a team together, assigning positions and roles. The guys have been brilliant, we have organised a couple of training sessions at the local 3G Pitches, which have been really well attended and we have quickly built a really good team spirit which we definitely needed on the day!!

 We got off to a great start, beating Grove United 2-1 and then drew with Morgan Sindall 1-1 in a really tight game, where we equalised in added time!! Next up was Trueform who we beat 3-1 and finally we scored an early goal and saw off POD TRAK 1-0. We were really pleased with how the team played and we qualified from our league in first place, having managed to earn 10 points. At this point we were all aching and had an agonising 1 hour to wait until our knock out fixture.

 Once all the matches had been completed the final 16 teams were drawn into their 2nd round matches where we were drawn to play Heathrow Harriers. We started brilliantly, scoring 2 early goals but unfortunately the long wait between games did us no favours and we let Heathrow Harriers back into the game and they managed to bring the score line back to 2-2. At this point our fitness levels and niggling injuries started to go against us and Heathrow Harriers managed to score another goal making it 3-2. We responded well and thanks to our good team spirit we really pulled together and started passing the ball around. Our persistence paid off with a brilliant pile driver effort from Rob Arnold which the keeper had no chance in saving bringing the game back to 3-3. Unfortunately for TIL Chargers it wasn’t to be and the Heathrow Harriers managed to get a 4th goal with seconds left on the clock and they deservedly went through to the Quarter Finals.

 I personally could not have been prouder with how we played. The team had only had 2 training sessions before we took part in the competition and this was the first time that we had played together as a team. A special mention is needed for our Goal Keeper James Currie, who was amazing throughout the day and kept us in a lot of the matches with some truly inspired saves – definitely our player of the tournament!!

 The experience has been a really positive one and we have all agreed that we will be continuing to play as a team moving forward and who knows next year we may even challenge for the title!!

 We would also like to thank Bernie for sorting us out with our TIL Chargers Kit, we definitely looked the part and it was a very kind gesture.

 Bernie Thomas – Managing Director for Thomas Interiors concluded.

It has been great listening to the guys talking about their experience yesterday and I think that they did us proud. I am very pleased that they will be continuing to play together as a team, the good morale and team spirit within the group is clear to see and I think that can only be a positive thing. From what I understand the team are not short of challengers so I’m sure that the Team will not have to wait too long for their next match?!

 Proactive managed to raise a brilliant £4680 for the mental health charity CALM and congratulations to the eventual winners Mace Logistics.
